GARY Rowett is looking for ‘balance’ in his line-up as he prepares for tonight’s Carabao Cup game against Reading.
Championship promotion is the main goal for Millwall but they will be keen for a morale-boosting cup run and avoiding a repeat of last year’s first-round loss at Cambridge United.
The Lions have been eliminated before the third round in eight of their last 11 League Cup campaigns.
And while Rowett is keen to keep the momentum from the win over Middlesbrough, he’s also wary of the cup game having a knock-on effect like last year.
Ahead of tonight’s match, the Millwall manager told NewsAtDen: “You always want to progress and advance. Most managers see it the same in the early rounds where you have opportunities to give people some game time and the opportunity to play. You’re always trying to find the balance.
“I certainly want to progress. I didn’t enjoy last season away at Cambridge where we ended up not only losing the game but losing George Honeyman to a red card and Bradders [Tom Bradshaw] to injury.
“You saw different sides to what that type of game can do. We had a main player who was then out for weeks and then another player who was suspended. I think that’s why some people rest some of their key players, some people make a lot of changes, some make a few changes. So I think we’ll try and find the balance.
“But we want to win the game. We want to continue the good feeling from Saturday and build on that performance but we have to make some sensible decisions amongst that.”
