MILLWALL are looking to make it back-to-back pre-season wins as they prepare to face Sutton United for only the second time in their history.
Despite both clubs being based in London, there has only been one previous meeting – a 9-1 Sutton win 58 years ago.
The Lions are coming off the back of a 2-0 victory over Gillingham which saw Kevin Nisbet hit his first goal for the club before Aidomo Emakhu netted late on.
And it’s League Two opposition up next again in the form of Matt Gray’s side.
The Us are one of lower league football’s success stories having spent all but the last two seasons in their history out of the EFL.
But a steady rise in recent years has seen the club climb from the Isthmian league up to League Two via three promotions in just 11 seasons.
They already have two pre-season games under their belt having taken a 3-2 away win at Havant & Waterlooville before beating Reading 2-0 at home.
Of their five goals, four have been scored by trialists.
Gary Rowett will be aware of the threat Sutton could pose at the VBS Community Stadium.
The Millwall boss is set to try and give players more time on the pitch rather than play different teams in each half, as he did against Gillingham.
He told NewsAtDen: “[It’s a] different theme on Tuesday. It’ll be about getting through the minutes.
“We’ll try and get as many people through 90 minutes as we can with a view that we’ll start to think about what the first 11 might begin to look like as we head to the next phase of games.”
A question mark may hang over the fitness of George Honeyman after the midfielder went off after 20 minutes at Priestfield.
He pulled up on the pitch and was assessed by medical staff before Rowett took him off.
The manager said: “He felt his quad was a little bit tight. Thursday we worked to almost a full match level so of course players are going to be tight, players are going to be a little bit sore.
“And we hope everyone can get through but you’re occasionally going to get one or two players who are going to break. And that’s what you have to do to push them to the next level.
“He just felt a little bit tight, he wasn’t sure if he pulled anything, he just felt he couldn’t run properly and therefore at that point, take him off.”
Millwall and Sutton have never met before in a competitive match and have only ever faced each other once in a friendly.
The friendly took place in August 1965 with Sutton grabbing an eye-catching 9-1 victory at Gander Green Lane.
Millwall actually scored the first goal of the game before being overwhelmed by Sutton’s “intoxicating” football, according to a Sutton & Cheam Advertiser report on the match.
