GARY Rowett is adamant that he isn’t setting any short-term targets for his side despite moving into the play-off places after Saturday’s win against West Brom.
The Millwall boss reaffirmed that his long-term aim was for the Lions to secure a top-six finish at the end of the campaign, but that he doesn’t believe in setting any short-term targets to prevent his players from taking their eyes off their ultimate goal.
“I don’t do that, I don’t really goal-set, I never have,” he told NewsAtDen.
“It’s great if you hit those targets, but if you don’t, I think it has a derogatory feel to it. You can flip that however you want and say that we can figure out what we need to do better but I don’t really like it.
“I don’t show the players. Every now and then I might, but I track where we’ve been for the last five seasons in the Championship and keep seeing how that compares in every game.
“Sometimes you’ll look and that line will be five or six games above where you need to be, but it might be around where the play-off line is. There’s times when you might be underneath that and you know you’ve got to improve. Then we’ll drill down with even more detail into what that means statistically.
“We’re a team that wants to try and win the next game, we’re focused on that, and personally I think that’s the best way of doing it. Rather than worrying about the results, we try and improve the way we work. If we do that well enough, we’ll win games regardless.”
