“A lot of people feel the loss of their green space,” said Clare Wood, Green Party candidate in May’s local elections. “Where their children can play. It’s an important part of quality of life.”
Southwark News is holding debates with local politicians about key policy areas ahead of the local elections in May – and showing them to four households in Newington, near Elephant and Castle, to get their reaction.
Labour’s plans to build thousands of council homes have often been opposed by groups of local people because of the question of where to build new housing in such a densely populated borough.
Many of the council’s new homes are planned for empty spaces on existing estates, which some residents say will block out light and disturb them.
Ms Wood said the council should focus more on bringing empty homes back into use rather than building on open spaces.
