St George’s Day is this Sunday, coinciding with the London Marathon – and these places in Southwark are each putting on something special so locals can celebrate the national patron saint’s day in style.
The Victoria Pub, Bermondsey
For the last 30 years, The Vic has been celebrating St George’s in style.
Owners, Pat and Mike, who are both Irish and English say that with St Patrick’s Day always being such a big occasion, they have wanted to mark the St George’s with the same fanfare and since then it’s grown and grown.
This Sunday, they’ll be open from 12 pm with music all day – “all the old British classics,” Pat told the News.
There will also be a free buffet from 5 pm.
According to Pat, “It’s always a great celebration” and this year will be no exception!

The Good Intent, Walworth
Another pub that marks the day every year is The Good Intent on East Street – by having a “traditional cockney bash!”
Bingo starts at 2 pm, with cash prizes to win. There’ll be live music from the ‘Bangers and Mash’ starting at 4 pm.
They’re open all day – (literally, they open at 7 am!) and happy hour is 10 am – 5 pm.

Borough Market
The Lions Part theatre company will be performing The Ballad of St George and the Dragon, an engaging piece of street theatre adapted by the company from a 500-year-old song.
“This colourful, comical telling of the saint’s story casts St George as a flawed and somewhat hapless knight who, after slaying the dragon, is filled with regret.”
Performances of this fun and fabulous musical romp, which are free to watch, will take place in
Market Hall at 11.15am, 12.15pm, 1.15pm and 2.15pm. Each performance is 15 minutes.

The Old Bank, Bermondsey
To anyone walking down the Blue, they’d see the flags outside The Old Bank and think it was St George’s Day all year round.
But they are going the extra mile this Sunday, with the help of DJ Noel.
He’ll be playing music all day long – and the pub is open 12 pm – 10:30 pm.
