Breakfast club kids at Victory Primary School in Walworth can look forward to extra toast in the mornings thanks to a partnership with Greggs bakery.
The Greggs Foundation, the charitable arm of the sausage roll empire, will now cover the cost of breakfast, currently served to fifteen to twenty children every morning.
Every morning, batches of buttery toast will be delivered to the hungry tots, courtesy of the Greggs on Walworth Road.
Agatha Peter, the school office manager, said: “It’s a bit of extra help for the parents. Lots of the children who attend breakfast club are on free school meals.”
“The children love it! They come in 8am, play some activities and have a proper breakfast ready for school at 9am.”
Thanks to the Greggs, the school can now expand the breakfast club, opening it up to more pupils, 67 of which are entitled to free school meals.
As well as toast, the school can order yoghurt, low sugar, high fibre cereal, juice and milk. Agatha says that Greggs have said they could also pay for a new freezer and toaster.
Launched in 1999, the Greggs Foundation’s Breakfast Club serves free, healthy breakfasts to 46,500 children at 700 different clubs across the country.
They aim to serve 70,000 breakfast to children each day by 2025.
Lynee Hindmark, Breakfast Club Manager for the Greggs Foundation said: “No child should ever start their day without breakfast, which is why we’re delighted to be opening two new Breakfast Clubs in London.”
“In May 2021, Greggs ran its latest annual Breakfast Club Appeal, during which over £120,000 was raised by Greggs colleagues and customers in just two weeks to support the cause – enabling the Greggs Foundation to provide 480,000 children with a free breakfast.”
“Following the success of the Breakfast Club Appeal, customers at Greggs stores nationwide can now donate a free breakfast to a child in need at one of Greggs’ Breakfast Clubs at any time of year. Customers simply need to tell a team member they want to “donate a breakfast for 25p” when they’re making a purchase, with donations going towards extending the programme.”
