Morrisons on Walworth Road is giving kids free fruit to help prevent food waste and make sure children get their five-a-day.
Each morning a wooden stand in front of the fresh fruit and veg section will be restocked with a range of ripe fruit – including apples, pears, oranges and bananas – that are within their ‘sell by’ limit but would otherwise soon be binned if not sold.
Children out shopping with their parents can help themselves, and the store hopes it will make a big difference to cutting down on food waste and helping kids in the area stay healthy.
Walworth Road store manager, Christopher Thomas, said: “Sometimes our store is left with unsold fruit and customers would prefer us to find a use for it.
“So we’re putting out fruit – that’s at risk of not being sold – for children to help themselves.
“It’s healthy for them, reduces food waste in our store and will help make shopping easier for parents.”
