A South East London hospital is set to close and move its inpatient ward to Denmark Hill after being declared “no longer fit for purpose.”
Last Tuesday December 14, Lambeth Council approved a new housing scheme on the site of Lambeth Hospital, the psychiatric facility run by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM). Lambeth Hospital will close in 2023.
The development represents part of SLaM’s plans to modernise its buildings and services, investing £186 million in mental healthcare services.
Lambeth Hospital’s inpatient wards are moving to a brand-new building on the trust’s Maudsley Hospital campus in Denmark Hill.
Construction of the purpose-built facility is already well underway.
David Bradley, SLaM chief executive, said: “We are very grateful to Lambeth Council for their support for our modernisation plans.
“Their decision… will help us ensure we can provide the highest standards of mental healthcare for the people of Lambeth while also making a significant contribution towards the number of new homes for families and individuals in need of good-quality affordable housing in the borough.”
The new development in Lambeth will provide 553 new homes, 50 per cent of which will be affordable.
Of these, 70 per cent will be socially rented and 30 per cent intermediate housing.
SLaM say that the plans have been formed through extensive consultation with the public and Lambeth Council to ensure they meet the needs of local people.
The car free development will also include over 1,000 cycle parking spaces and includes solar panels, green roofs, air source heat pumps, and a sustainable urban drainage system.
