In the wake of the attack the Southwark Park association 1869, which represents the park, warned that a lack of community wardens patrolling the park could lead to more such violent incidents.
A spokesperson for the police said: “Detectives are investigating an attempted robbery in Southwark Park.
“Police were called at approximately shortly before 14:50hrs on Saturday, 2 July after a man in his 40s reported that a group of about 4-5 men demanded his phone and one of the men threatened him with a knife.
“The man was not physically harmed and nothing was taken. The group of men then made off in the direction of Gomm Road. Any witnesses should call 101 and give reference 4274/02 July.”
