Southwark and Lambeth are among the boroughs with the highest numbers of new Covid-19 infections in London, as the Omicron variant continues to sweep through the capital.
Government data released on Friday afternoon shows that Southwark had 5,338 new Covid-19 cases in the seven-day period ending December 17. That’s behind only Lambeth, with 6,528 cases, and Wandsworth, with 6,317 new infections, over the same period.
Hackney and the City of London (treated as one borough for Covid-19 purposes), Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Croydon, Bromley, Islington and Greenwich made up the rest of the top ten.
Out of the other south-east London boroughs, Lewisham had 4,542 new infections, Bromley had 4,141, Greenwich 3,819 new infections and Bexley had 2,802.
Cases in Southwark rose faster than all but five London boroughs over the same period, with an increase in new infections of 188 per cent compared to the previous week.
Lambeth had the biggest weekly surge in cases, with 228 per cent. Hackney and the City of London saw a rise of 224.5 per cent. Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Islington completed the list of the top five biggest risers in London.
Deaths remain relatively low in Southwark, with four people dying within 28 days of being infected from December 11-17. That’s still up from two the previous seven days.
The Omicron variant of Covid-19 is thought to be behind the fast spread of the virus. Experts think it now accounts for about 75 per cent of Covid cases in London.
Southwark Council chiefs continue to urge people to get their booster jab to help stop the spread and reduce serious illness from Covid-19.
