Nunhead sculptor Rafael Klein has won the Dulwich Picture Gallery competition to create a new sculpture for the Tessa Jowell Health Centre in East Dulwich. He says, ‘The project is all about embedding art in healthcare, and my new sculpture will enhance the healing environment; the design unites people with nature in several ways: the garden in the atrium connects to the interior of the Centre, and by using translucent images of landscapes from the Dulwich Picture Gallery collection. A series of small sculptures walking along the window sill will echo the figures in the DPG artworks, bringing them into the physical space of the Health Centre.’
A large figure in the garden, visible through the glass windows, will continue this theme. It will be crowned with the canopy of a tree with smaller figures inside connected by branches. It will also include details developed in workshops that the artist will conduct with users and staff of the Centre, reinforcing the connection with nature, and creating a sense of ownership.
