The postal service shows no sign of improvement in East Dulwich, with residents claiming they only get their post once a week.
Most people point to the closure of the East Dulwich sorting office as being the catalyst for the downfall of the postal service. In 2018, the office merged with the one in Peckham, leading some people to suggest they needed more posties to manage the extra load and cover the larger areas.
Royal Mail argues it is addressing the issue by taking on more staff nationally – but this doesn’t seem to be making much of a difference in this area.
Since publishing the story we had more residents come forward and highlight how the poor service was affecting their lives – with claims like: ‘We received a letter from Thames Water saying the water was going to be turned off – two days after the event.’
There’s no excuse for people getting post so late, or in some cases just once a week.
East Dulwich residents say postal service is still ‘bad’ despite Royal Mail taking on more staff
Up until around ten years ago, Royal Mail was under the control of the government, so its primary aim was to deliver a public service and do it well. Many now claim that since it was privatised in 2013, the focus became profit, which has led to lots of the branches being sold off to developers.
Meanwhile, the service appears to have taken a beating and as a result, important things are being missed.
When they privatised the service they said it wouldn’t affect post delivery six days a week – but it’s clear it has been affected.
Courier services like Amazon and DHL have become the only reliable sources if we want something fast – but what use is a new kitchen blender if you’re missing all your hospital appointments?
