A Nunhead artist has created a collection of stunning artworks that will greet visitors to the Tessa Jowell Centre in Dulwich.
Rafael Klein was commissioned by Dulwich Picture Gallery to make a large sculpture named ‘Osiris’ for the garden courtyard plus eighteen smaller models that will line the staircase.
Rafael told the News: “The installation has two parts: a large sculpture in the garden called Osiris which incorporates images developed by workshop participants.
“Then, on the staircase, there are a series of my smaller sculptures with transparent reproductions from landscape paintings I have chosen from the Dulwich Picture Gallery collection.
“Together, they emphasise our connection with nature, using the theme of ‘Figures in the Landscape’ or ‘Human Nature’.”
Osiris, the Egyptian god of resurrection, life and vegetation and Klein’s sculpture – part-human form, part tamarisk tree – embodies the fusion of those elements.
Look carefully and, within the sculpture, observers will see miniature people, surrounded by leaves, fruit and animals.
Commissioned as part of the creative partnership between Dulwich Picture Gallery and NHS South East London Integrated Care Board, Klein hopes it will capture the spirit and collaborative nature of the local community.
The miniature sculptures on the staircase are against a backdrop of landscapes from some of Dulwich Picture Gallery’s best-known paintings.
The paintings in the windows are semi-transparent, allowing people to see through them to the garden.
