South London Maker Festival returns this Saturday, after a two-year hiatus, with visitors offered the chance to get stuck into an array of free design and technology workshops.
Visitors will be building robot cardboard arms, gawping at chaos pendulums, agonising over soldering irons and brushing up on their origami at the free Herne Hill event.
Part of Dulwich Festival’s Artists’ Open House, the event is being held in Station Hall, above Herne Hill Station, Railton Road on Saturday May 14 from 11am to 5pm.
South London Makerspace, the organisation behind the event said: “The festival is all about celebrating making, curiosity and creativity for all ages and levels of experience. We believe the only qualification needed to be a maker is the desire to make things.
Visitors will relive Dr Who’s classic monsters, with a ‘Creatures of Dr Who’ show-and-tell featuring a full-size Dalek.
There will also be lively presentations on 3D printing, laser cutting, and an exploration of how robots interact and play.
Hands-on workshops include lessons on pottery, computer-controlled woodworking, mesmeric crafts called flextangles, and more.
There will also be a focus on light-emitting creations, immersive glow zones, coloured shadows and jaw-dropping laser sound visualisations.
For those living in homes cluttered with half-finished projects, why not bring one along to the Electronics Hardware Jam, where electronic experts will help to reboot it?
There will even be a mysteriously named ‘inverted panopticon’, which Makerspace concedes is “hard to explain”.
South London Makerspace, based in the railway arches on the Bath Factory Estate, Norwood Road, was formed in 2014 to “lower the barriers to high-quality making”.
South London Maker Festival is taking place from 11am to 5pm, Saturday May 14, at Station Hall, Railton Road, SE24 0JW.
