Southwark’s first Ghanaian Akwasidae festival, which honours heroes of the past, is coming to Camberwell, with traditional food, entertainment and Afrobeats.
It is a religious celebration to remember past leaders and heroes, the Ashanti royal lineage and Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
It is the first of its kind to be held in south London – and was chosen because Southwark has the highest West African population in London.
Director, Tyreece Asamoah said: “There will be an array of Ghanaian Kings and Queens there from all over the UK. Traditional rites will be performed.”
The rites relate to honouring personal and community ancestors and involve drumming, dancing and singing, as well as food offerings.
“From the Azonto to Stormzy, Ghana and Ghanaians have been at the forefront of popular culture and this festival is another addition to the cultural connection between the UK and Ghana,” the organisers added.
Other entertainment will include acrobats and music from Afrobeats artist, Article Wan. For children, there will be free face painters, arts and crafts and Busybee will provide free interactive tech sessions to keep them entertained.
Food vendors catering the day will include Mozah, Fourth Garden and Harbourview.
This is a free event open to all and organisers say it is ‘not to be missed.’
