Anyone who wants to have their say on the cuts Transport for London (TfL) is proposing to make to Southwark’s buses only has until the end of the week to do so.
TfL is proposing to cut the 12, 148, 53 and 78, which all have large sections running through Southwark, and make changes to the routes of several more.
The consultation, which was extended because of the huge numbers of people that have taken part, runs until this Sunday (August 7). It started on June 1.
‘A kick below the belt’: passengers and drivers react to possible Nunhead bus cut
The transport agency has been told by the government that it needs to find £400 million of savings if it is to get a long-term funding deal. A deal is now on the table, but it is unclear if it includes money to keep the same level of bus services – and TfL is still negotiating.
The Southwark bus cuts are among sixteen proposed across London.
Last Thursday, residents and local politicians gathered in Nunhead to discuss the impact the bus cuts could have on their lives.
Could the possible new TfL deal mean the Bakerloo Line Extension is revived?
Marina Ahmad, Assembly Member for Southwark and Lambeth, was there and condemned the proposals.
She said: “While it was fantastic to see so many people eager to join the fight to save our buses, it should never have come to this.
“Southwark residents, and all Londoners, are being unfairly punished by more than two years of Government inaction over offering TfL a fair, long-term funding deal.
“Buses are vital in our borough, where there is already a lack of transport links. They are a lifeline for so many people, whether they are travelling for work, school, food shopping or visiting family and friends.
“I am glad to be able to bring the community together on this important issue. I am urging all residents to take part in the consultation to make sure their voices are heard loud and clear. ”
Bus drivers ‘first heard they could lose route from rival company’
TfL will announce the results of the review this autumn. Any changes would come in from April next year.
