This week, we reported that seventeen schools could close after a parent at St Francesca Cabrini Primary School, itself at risk of closure, was reportedly told so at a school meeting.
The News contacted the council on multiple occasions over a two week period, asking for clarification as to whether the speculation was true.
Instead, repeatedly we have been given the same insipid statement about “each school having different circumstances”, dodging the question completely.
Exclusive: Confusion as council refuses to confirm whether 17 primary schools face closure
Parents are understandably panicked by these rumours, and a simple explanation would go a long way towards easing fears.
If declining birth rates are to blame for falling admissions, the council isn’t at fault for that.
But regardless of the challenges the council might face, through no fault of its own, it has a responsibility to communicate with parents, and even with this paper – asking on their behalf.
We believe that communities of engaged and energised parents will always be vital to the success of Southwark’s schools. The council must stop leaving them in the dark over this.
