For us, to share invites you to Southwark Park Galleries on Saturday 7th May 2-5pm to drop by and celebrate a recipe book created by students from the Bosco Centre. All of whom currently call Southwark home; whether refugee, migrant, asylum seeker, or native – sharing stories, recipes, and food.
They explored ideas of home via food and spice, with artists, Saima Rasheed and mother tongues, a local and global team. Over a period of four workshops, the group engaged with historical archives from Southwark, painting with spice, and translated their own recipes of home through multiple forms of media to produce a visual recipe book. Home, in this case, is across the globe with many students having travelled from different parts of the world. The recipe book is a way to illustrate lots of different cultures in one place.
Saima’s artistic practice uses historical techniques that are presented in a modern way. This is done by looking at the idea of home and belonging through her paintings as a migrant woman of colour. mother tongues’ host translation parties where they explore themes of language and identity. Guided by the artists, the group of young people worked with materials such as spices and herbs to remind them of their home country. This was a way to bring a sense of ‘home’ to life, via food and painting. Connecting with the Southwark archives from John Harvard Library enabled the students to recognise that home can be anywhere you make it.
For us, to share is constant and will continue to develop. Food is a tangible history passed through hands and oceans; this book is a message to the relationship we all have with places and people.
