Southwark’s council estates will be the focus of a ‘access all areas’ Channel 4 series this autumn.
The six-part series, Council House Britain, will go behind the scenes to meet housing officers and pest officers, as well as tenants who live in council housing.
The council is one of the largest public landlords in the country with an estimated 55,000 properties.
“Council House Britain offers a timely and eye-opening insight into what’s involved in managing one of the biggest and busiest boroughs in the country,” said Channel 4 commissioning editors Fozia Khan and Madonna Benjamin.
“With access to both council workers and their tenants, the series is bursting with characters and their stories.
“It provides a warm, uplifting and at times jaw-dropping glimpse into what it takes to find and keep a place to call home.”
Among those interviewed in the series, which is produced by the company behind 24 Hours in A&E, are housing officer Charmaine, and pest control officers Andy and Wayne.
The documentary makers promise the series will listen to “heart-breaking stories of families on the edge” and reveal a story of government cuts forcing hard choices on council authorities.
The council’s leader, Cllr Peter John, said the series would show the “unsung heroes” of the council’s housing team.
“Council officers are often the unsung heroes of the public sector, but just as COVID-19 has revealed the important work our rubbish collectors and social care workers do, Council House Britain will show the country how passionate and committed our housing teams are,” he said.
Well get them quick before Southwark pulls them down for luxury housing . Social cleansing on an industrial scale currently taking place

The advance puff makes it sound like an LBS whitewash.

I watched this on catchup. I know Southwark well, worked in the area for 14 years. I would like to find out what happened to Yvonne, Maltese lady? She said she worked for the church before becoming homeless. I know an organisation that would accommodate lay church workers.
We love Charmaine, what a lovely lady
Southwark Council smoke and mirrors commissioned by them but the documentary fails to say despite this airing how the problems still exist and they still let Rat infested properties to vulnerable over 55s Caroline Gardens and leave vulnerable over 55s with chronic Disrepair knowingly. Yes it’s Government Cuts plays a part but bigger issue is Council Incompetence and waste in their Repairs Section hierarchy having experienced this all myself and God help the Residents of Southwark it can only get worse till they clean in house up and out first.
