Roy’s efforts not enough in Kent T20 loss

England and Surrey opener Jason Roy spanked a sparkling half century against Kent in the NatWest T20 blast competition, but it was not enough to secure his side a win.

The south group game last Friday saw the Kennington side bat first with Roy getting Surrey off to a flyer by hitting 52 off 29 balls.

But Surrey were then pegged back by the home side’s attack although they still managed to muster a respectable 180 off their allotted 20 overs.

When Kent replied Sam Curran clean bowled Joe Denly for a duck but his opening partner Daniel Bell-Drummond proved to be the star of the night as he guided Kent home.

Lewisham born Bell-Drummond ended up undefeated on 112, off 65 balls, and with Sam Northeast hitting 57 in support the home side made it home with two balls to spare to pick up an eight wicket win.

Surrey now sit outside the qualification places in the south group, the top four will make it through to the quarter finals, although they are still very much in the running should they be able to start picking up victories.

In the County Championship Surrey took on Yorkshire last week and a rain affected contest was played out to an inevitable draw. Both sides only managed to fit in an innings apiece in the four days with Surrey mustering just 267 when batting first time around.

Aaron Finch, Steven Davies and Curran all scored fifties in that total but the Tykes Adam Lyth will take most from the game as he scored a double century. Something he hopes will put him back on the radar of the England selectors.
