Curran stars as Surrey win T20 opener

Tom Curran starred with bat and ball as Surrey won their first T20 encounter of the season at Essex last Friday night.

The 21-year-old will have to share the plaudits with Pakistani veteran Azhar Mahmood as the duo helped build a total they could bowl at, and then did the majority of the damage with the ball in hand.

When Surrey batted first at Chelmsford and were reduced to 80/6 by the home side victory looked to be a long way off. But Curran, 32 off 26 balls, and the 41-year-old Mahmood, 44 off 22 balls, saw the visitors post 170 in their allotted overs.

Mahmood then took two early wickets before Curran picked up three scalps, for just 21 runs, allowing the Pakistani star to mop up the tail and secure an eight run victory.

In the County Championship Surrey secured nine points as they played out a rain affected contest at the Kia Oval against Middlesex that ended in a draw.

Batting first the north London side scored 395, with Nick Gubbins top scoring with 91, before the home team mustered 242 in response.

That total allowed Middlesex to take up the option to force Surrey to bat again, but the rain and a stubborn unbeaten stand of 98 from openers Rory Burns and Arun Harinath meant the game petered out to a stalemate.
