Jack Dromey, the husband of Peckham and Camberwell MP Harriet Harman, has died aged 73, his family has confirmed.
Dromey, the Labour MP for Birmingham Erdington since 2010, died on Friday morning (January 7).
His family said in a statement: ““He was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather and he will be greatly missed.”
His son Joe Dromey added on Twitter: “Our dad – Jack – died suddenly today. We loved him so, so much. Rest in peace, big man.”
Tributes came in from across the political spectrum to Dromey after his death, including from Harman’s fellow Southwark MP Helen Hayes.
The Labour member for Dulwich and West Norwood said on Twitter: “Devastated to hear that Jack Dromey passed away this morning. A lovely, kind and generous colleague with a fierce heart for justice who I was proud to know.
“Thinking of Harriet Harman Jack’s family & all who loved him at this terribly sad time”.
Harman and Dromey, a former trade unionist, had been married for nearly 40 years, after first meeting on a picket line in 1977. They have three children.
Harman said late last year that she plans to step down from her Peckham and Camberwell seat at the next election.
