It’s curtains for daily chores as robots trialled in Nunhead flats

Where can you see a robot doing the hoovering and a tablet being used to open the door, close the curtains and turn the lights on?

No, it’s not the latest sci-fi film, it’s a block of flats in Nunhead.

A group of lucky residents in Habinteg Housing Association properties in Tappesfield Road, are getting to try out some of the latest technology to help the elderly and disabled live independently.

Just 22 people in the UK and 180 across Europe have been given a go on the gadgets, which can open your window, text your friend, and turn the heating down using voice control alone.

The iRobot Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner independently moves itself around your flat hoovering up dirt and even takes itself back to a charging station when it is about to run out of battery.

Tappesfield Road tenants, like Ingrid Jones, have a range of mobility issues and say the futuristic technology can make their lives a lot easier.

“You can’t put a price on the energy it saves. To keep getting up and getting up, I’ve got no energy left to enjoy myself,” said Ingrid.

Habinteg’s new Chair, Manny Lewis, went to Nunhead to see the Star Trek-esque devices in action.

“Technology will inevitably play a greater part in tackling some of the day to day issues tenants face,” said Manny.

“I’m pleased that Habinteg and our tenants in south London are looking to the future and innovating at a national and international level.”
