HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

A humble wall in Peckham has been transformed into a giant visual illusion thanks to the latest instalment of Dulwich Picture Gallery’s project bringing fine art to the streets.

World-renowned Iranian artist Mehdi Ghedyanloo, who specialises in creating trick-of-the-eye murals on buildings, has created a version of David Tenirs the Younger’s 17th century masterpiece – ‘A Castle and its Proprietors’.

Ghedyanloo’s modern-day version painted on the side of 15 Kinsale Road makes it seem as if you can see through the open frame of the building to the scene behind. If viewed from a certain point across the road, the two extruding chimney breasts are rendered invisible by the magic-eye mural.

Opposite Nunhead Cemetery a scene of the resurrection has also been painted on the side of the Waverley Arms by Australian artist Jimmy C. The new work remains faithful to Sebastiano Ricci’s 1715 original – except this time it’s been executed in spray-paint.
