Tower Bridge closing for three nights next week

Tower Bridge is set to close for three nights next week for repairs to take place on the structure.

The City of London Corporation, which manages the bridge, said the road over the bridge will be closed from 10pm-5am next Tuesday-Thursday (November 16-19).

The 128-year-old bridge has suffered a number of malfunctions in recent months, including being stuck open twice since August, causing huge traffic jams and disruption for motorists in London.

The bridge also flooded in September amid heavy rain, with the problem apparently caused by anti-terrorist measures put in place after the attacks on two other London bridges in 2017. Authorities tried to fix this issue three years ago, but it appears that this may not have been totally effective.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said in 2018 that anti-terrorist barriers on the bridge had blocked the drainage gullies and led to a build-up of standing water.
