Report for reopening Camberwell Station pushed back another two months

The publication of a ‘business case’ for reopening Camberwell’s railway’s station has been pushed back another two months, Transport for London has said.

The report, which TfL is producing with Southwark Council and Network Rail, is expected to set out the “feasibility” of adding the stop between Elephant and Castle and Loughborough Junction.

If approved, it would revive the old platforms which still stand in Camberwell Station Road, but which closed 101 years ago, and once linked Herne Hill with Farringdon.

The Business Case was originally promised for mid-June. But a TfL spokesman then told the News on July 13 that it will be pushed back for “another couple of months”.

The spokesman said: “They’ve decided it needs a bit of extra work. It was a consensus of opinion between the three at the meeting. It will take a couple of months. Then it will need signing off again.”

Camberwell Station campaigners rally

A local campaigner Sophy Tayler, founder of Priority Action for Camberwell Transport (PACT), told the News: “Camberwell Station is a platform for change. Our community needs better transport and the further benefits this brings for jobs and investment in the area.

“Whilst the added delays in publishing the business plan for station are disappointing, the campaign team at PACT is urging all the parties contributing to the plan to ensure that it is both viable and robust.”

An online petition created by PACT, and backed by MPs Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes, has received over 1,700 signatures.

It’s a piece of cake!

Camberwell Station campaigners will create a giant cake in the shape of a red railway station logo, which will make an appearance at the Brunswick Park Fete on August 5.

The campaigners said: “Join campaigners decorating a huge cake with the Camberwell Station logo.

“Facebook or tweet your photo – we’ll be sending a slice of the action to TfL and [London Mayor] Sadiq Khan – and  also sharing with at least a trainload of local supporters on the day.”

The fete will run from 1pm to 4pm.
