Petition launched to improve ‘chaotic’ Jamaica Road

A campaign to introduce yellow boxes at key junctions along Jamaica Road has been launched to reduce traffic chaos.

Liberal Democrat councillors have called for the boxes to be installed at St. James’s Road and Abbey Street, to prevent vehicles turning right and blocking Jamaica Road completely.

Transport for London have agreed to look at re-designing the Rotherhithe Tunnel roundabout as part of a longer term solution, with proposals expected later this year.

Riverside Liberal Democrat councillor Eliza Mann said: “Everyone knows the chaos caused by traffic jams day in and day out along Jamaica Road.  It is often quicker to get off and walk than take the bus.

“Not only is it frustrating for drivers and bus passengers, but the pollution caused by cars stop-starting or crawling along at a snail’s pace is also bad for the health of residents living around Jamaica Road and pedestrians.

“Liberal Democrat councillors are here to fight residents’ corner.  We hope as many local residents as possible support our campaign for yellow boxes along Jamaica Road now while we keep up the pressure on TfL to improve the Rotherhithe Tunnel roundabout.”

The Liberal Democrats have launched a petition to accompany the campaign to stress to TfL the urgent need for action.

The News has previously reported on the dangers of Jamaica Road, as a motorcyclist was hospitalised at the beginning of April after a collision with a car at the Dockhead junction.

Last month a white van burst into flames outside The Boatman pub on the road, but police said they were not treating it as suspicious.
