Cycleways Festival to be held in Southwark Park to promote cycling

A day of cycling-themed activities will be held in Southwark Park this weekend in a bid to encourage Londoners to get on two wheels.

The Cycleways Festival, on Sunday June 9, comes ahead of work starting on the new Cycleway 4 route between Greenwich and Tower Bridge this summer.

The route will include track on Tooley Street, Jamaica Road, Evelyn Street and Creek Road and also involves a “complete overhaul” of Rotherhithe roundabout and five new pedestrian crossings.

The event, taking place around the park bandstand, will include a pop-up Santader Cycles docking station – allowing people to hire bikes in the park for the first time – as well as opportunities to have a bike checked by mechanics.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, who holds the transport portfolio at Southwark Council, said the council was delighted to be hosting the cycle-friendly event.

“We are keen for even more people in Southwark to walk and cycle more, in a move to improve their health and wellbeing, along with road safety and air quality,” he said.

Other attractions at the pedal-power festival include a ‘smoothie bike’, which will create a fruity drink if pedalled, and virtual reality headsets mimicking the view of a lorry driver and cyclist to point out their individual blind-spots.

The festival takes place from 10am to 4pm.

TfL said it would be holding other Cycleway-themed events throughout the summer.
