Tailor is made up with customised blue plaque

The owner of a bespoke tailor on Walworth Road has been awarded a custom made blue plaque – by customers and nearby residents.

George Dyer – who’s owned Thread Needleman for 20 years – narrowly missed out to Bermondsey funeral directors FA Albin &?Sons on being awarded a blue plaque in a borough-wide scheme, run by Southwark Heritage Association and the News this year. So locals got together and got him his own one made, which he now displays in his shop.

George, who has made suits for celebrities such as Hobbit actor Martin Freeman and former boxing champ David Haye, told the News:?“It brought me closer with my local community. It’s made me feel as though I have worth within the community – I feel wanted, needed, loved. I’m keeping a trade alive, and there are people who appreciate the craft I’m in.”

Speaking about just losing out on the Southwark Heritage plaque, he said: “To have been nominated was fantastic – I felt great that people thought quite a lot of me to have been nominated amongst the likes of Albin and people like that. It was an honour to be nominated and an even greater honour to come second to Albin, as he’s done ever so much for the community. I felt appreciated that so many people felt so much of me to put me in that place.”

George, however, still remains humble: “I just saw myself as a tailor on Walworth Road, trying to keep what I was taught alive. I’m here concentrating on what I do and I’m really pleased that people in Southwark think so much of me to have commended me for a Blue Plaque. I’ve got good people behind me.”

The Southwark blue plaque scheme seeks to honour the most notable community figures and places within Southwark, awarding them for their work.
