Residents oppose plans to demolish The Glad

A “much loved and thriving local pub” in Borough is in danger of being demolished and replaced with a ten-storey block of flats.

Developers want to knock down the historic Gladstone Arms in Lant Street and have submitted a planning application to Southwark Council for a residential tower.

The storied boozer dates back 130 years and has been well-known for years as a respected music venue. Unlike most of the threatened pubs across the borough, ‘the Glad’ is still in business, with live performances every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes said: “The Glad is a much loved and thriving local pub that is key to the historic character of the local area, with great beer, food and live music. Local people value this pub, as is clear from the 150 comments already received by the council on this planning application.

“We want to protect pubs like The Glad for community use, and residents can have their say on these proposals on the council’s planning portal as part of the public consultation.”

Southwark Council and  the News are taking part in a pilot scheme to make planning applications more accessible to local residents.  To register and to search, comment and view information on planning applications, as well as get email alerts visit:  You can also view current planning applications on Southwark Maps at or by typing ‘Southwark Maps’ into a search engine.
