Southwark to remember fallen soldiers

Southwark will honour the memories of its fallen men and women this weekend at a number of Remembrance Sunday events across the borough.

The official service will take place in Borough High Street at the St Saviour’s War Memorial at 10.30am. Two minutes of silence, which is due to take place across the country, will be recognised at 11am.

The ceremony will be led by The Rev Canon Gilly Myers, of Southwark Cathedral, and will be attended by Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Dora Dixon-Fyle, and Deputy Lieutenant Mrs Jenny Bianco, who will represent The Queen.

The borough’s MPs will also lay wreaths on the day, as will Southwark Council Leader Peter John and Southwark Lib Dems leader Councillor Anood Al-Samerai.

Anyone else wishing to lay their own wreath must call 020 7525 7303 or email mayors.office@southwark.gov.uk in advance. The service will be followed by light refreshments at the Slug and Lettuce, which is located by the war memorial.

Other services will also take place across the borough, including one at the recently renovated war memorial in Old Jamaica Road. Wreaths will be laid at 10am at the plaque, which bears the names of 970 Bermondsey men who died fighting for their country during WW1.

Remembrance ceremonies will also take place at the war memorials in West Lane, College Road, Camberwell Green, Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park and Kennington Lane at from 10am onwards.
