Southwark local election results 2018 live

The political make-up of Southwark Council could be set to change after thousands headed out to cast their vote in the local election today.

Polling closed at 10pm and council staff are now counting the votes.

Labour was the ruling party in Southwark but this could potentially change depending on the results tonight.

Experts are predicting a Labour surge across both Southwark and London – and say it is a possibility they could take all 63 seats in the borough.

But the News understands the opposition Liberal Democrats are hoping to hold on to the seats they already have in this election and make gains.

Following a boundary review, each electoral ward in Southwark has changed in some way in this election – some have a new name, others have a different number of councillors, and some voters found they have to go to a different polling station this year. The election has been cancelled in new ward London Bridge and West Bermondsey after Conservative candidate Toby Eckersley sadly died unexpectedly. The date for a new election to be held in that ward will be announced in due course.

The election will go ahead as planned in all other wards.

We’ll be at the council’s Tooley Street headquarters to bring you live reaction and updates throughout the night and a ward-by-ward run-down of the results, expected to be announced in the early hours.
