Southwark Council Leader praises “best borough” after OBE award

Southwark Council Leader Peter John paid tribute to “the best borough in the best city in the world” after he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Years Honour list.

He was recognised for his role in political services and services to local government, six years after he was elected as leader of the council.

He said: “It is hard to put into words how honoured and humbled I feel to be included in this year’s New Year Honours. I often tell people that Southwark is the best borough in the best city in the world, and I am incredibly proud to serve this great community.

“Local government isn’t always recognised for all the good work it does, but being a council leader is a hugely rewarding job, and I hope that people see today’s announcement as recognition for our borough as well.”

Michael Pusey, the founder of Peckham BMX Club, was also honoured with an MBE for services to youth sport – although he originally thought the notice was about his taxes.

“I actually thought, oh, this is from the Cabinet Office, is it the taxman?” he said. “I was surprised, and I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when they see this news article that I’ve received an MBE.”

Michael, known as CK Flash, spent seven years fundraising and getting support for the youth facility, which helps under-privileged kids in Peckham and Brixton get off the streets and put their energy towards something healthy and rewarding.

Adrian Koe, of Downside Fisher Youth Club was awarded an MBE for voluntary services to young people, while Bob Allies and Graham Morrison, founders of Southwark Street-based architecture firm Allies & Morrison, were honoured with OBEs for services to architecture.
