Pro-Millwall election candidate Willow Winston: ‘My fight continues’

The pro-Millwall candidate who stood for election in Lewisham East has said her fight continues to protect the local community and the football club from regeneration.

Willow Winston – backed by the Association of Millwall Supporters – gained 355 votes in the constituency.

The 73-year-old had said that, if elected, she would campaign for reform to laws around compulsory purchase orders (CPOs), a legal process which Lewisham Council hoped to use to force private land owners, including Millwall, from land proposed for redevelopment.

Willow told the News: “I am very grateful for the votes I had, and it was an extraordinary experience, talking to many complete strangers on their door steps and on the streets. People were very sympathetic to what I was standing for.

“I stood for Millwall and the community. People understood the principle, about not having whole neighbourhoods destroyed so that property developers could move in and make a billion or two or three.

“There was a rush of people voting for Jeremy Corbyn, but I think those people were voting for a sort of revolution that is desired in this country. Not necessarily for the local Labour candidate.”

The results for the Lewisham East constituency were:

  • Heidi Alexander (Labour) = 32,072
  • Peter Fortune (Conservative) = 10,859
  • Emily Frith (Liberal Democrat) =   2,086
  • Störm Poorun (Green) = 803
  • Keith Forster (UKIP) = 798
  • Willow Winston (Independent) = 355
  • Maureen Martin (Christian People’s Alliance) = 228
