Southwark Council leader Peter John seeks to reassure firms after Brexit vote

Southwark Council’s Leader Peter John has said the council is “speaking to developers” involved in projects around the borough to “see what the impact of Brexit might be”, amid uncertainty caused by the Brexit vote.

He said: “The last week has been hugely unsettling for the country, with the pound slumping, multinational businesses already pulling staff out of the city, and Scotland resurrecting talk of independence.

“We have also heard reports of a rise in shameless and disgraceful racist abuse around the country. Like the majority of Southwark residents I did not support Brexit and will strive to limit its negative impacts in Southwark.

We must not let the negativity that has characterised this campaign damage our borough and our future. We have already written to our biggest business employers reiterating our commitment to working with them to help deliver opportunity and prosperity for our residents.

“We are speaking to developers who are helping us achieve our ambitious plans to build thousands of new homes, to see what the impact of Brexit might be. But at the moment, there is a huge amount of uncertainty and it’s impossible to know, in detail, what the future holds.”
