Underground garages in Rotherhithe in dramatic fire

A garage on the Silwood Estate in Rotherhithe caught fire in the early hours of Sunday, causing damage but no injuries, writes Thomas Deacon.

Two fire engines attended the blaze on Millender Walk off Silwood Street on August 14 after being called at 2.35am.

Fire crews from Deptford and Old Kent Road stations attended the scene, and the fire was under control by 3.47am.

Southwark cabinet member for housing Councillor Stephanie Cryan said: “There was a fire on the Silwood estate at the weekend, which was dealt with quickly and cleared. Officers have inspected the site to see what, if any, repairs are needed and ensure the area is made safe.”

The fire follows reports from a resident of the estate that homeless people are using the garages for shelter.

Cllr Cryan said: “We are aware there has been a slight increase in the number of reports of rough sleepers in the area over the last few weeks and resident service officers will be making inspections of the estate to reassure residents and importantly to make sure anyone who is rough sleeping is offered the right help and support.

“If any resident sees anyone sleeping rough I would ask them to call 020 7902 7941 to inform our support services so that we can provide that support as quickly as possible.”
