Southwark tenants group brings community together amid rise in violent crime

A group of Southwark tenants are bringing the community together this summer in the midst of a succession of crimes in the borough.

The Southwark Group of Tenants Organisation held a football tournament at Peckham’s Athenlay Football Club at the beginning of August which saw ten teams with members spanning from seven to twelve-years-old get together to go head to head on the pitch.

The Rockingham Estate bagged the trophy for the ten to twelve-year-olds and the Mighty Royal brought the cup home for the seven to nine-year-olds.

Their annual summer festival saw musicians from fifteen to 84 grace the stage in Camberwell Green in July alongside a nail salon, clothes and natural health products all made by tenants.

The chair of Rockingham Tenant and Resident Association Jafer Sharif said: “Southwark is facing crisis at the moment, our young people are experiencing unprecedented challenges to their social development.

“But today we fight back, SGTO, parents and most importantly young people have come together voluntarily to take a stand against knife crime, online bullying and drug abuse.

“It is today our futures will change the fortunes of our community forever. Thank you everyone for all the hard work you have contributed.”

The Southwark Group of Tenants Organisation Youth Forum currently meets at the SGTO, 19 Buller Close, Bells Gardens, SE15 6UJ on Wednesday evenings from 6pm.
