Elephant and Castle: Co-op to open new shopping centre supermarket in place of closed Tesco

The Co-op is to open a venue to replace the closed Tesco Metro at the Elephant and Castle shopping centre later this summer.

The Tesco at the centre closed earlier this year over pest control issues, which saw the store overrun with mice.

Now the Co-op will take over the venue and has applied to Southwark Council for planning permission to erect signage inside and outside the centre.

A Co-op spokesperson refused to be drawn on an exact opening date, but said: “We look forward to bringing our award-winning ranges to even more of customers and members later this summer with a new convenience store at the Elephant and Castle shopping centre.”

A spokesperson for the Tesco had initially insisted that the store was only “temporarily” closed in March while it hired contractors to battle mice.

The company had also said it was liaising with the shopping centre landlord over the pest control issue and would re-open.

However, the branch closed permanently in April following a “business decision” by the supermarket giant.

The centre is slated for redevelopment – but as yet there is no clear indication of when the controversial work will begin.
