Croquet is not just for the posh, says the Dulwich club appealing for new members

A Croquet club in Dulwich is appealing for new members, saying it wants to cast off the game’s posh image.

The club, one of the UK’s oldest, has 60 members but could accommodate up to 90 on its three full-size lawns near the railway arches on Dulwich’s Burbage Road.

Alongside social play, the club also boasts two international competitive players and a subsidised bar.

All equipment is provided for free and new members also benefit from complementary tuition. Paul Newton, club secretary, explains: “Croquet is not a game just for the wealthy on private, very large gardens. Croquet clubs are public spaces and members come from a variety of backgrounds. Although a lot of Dulwich members are retired, many are still working people.

“Croquet is a game where young and old, male and female can play on equal terms, all year round.”
