Kitty crisis as rescuers run out of foster homes

Pet rescue services in Southwark have been “swamped” with calls reporting abandoned kittens in the borough and have now run out of homes to place them in.

Summer is the height of kitten season and because cat owners are not neutering their cats, numerous litters of kittens are arriving unexpectedly and then being abandoned on Southwark streets.

Twelve kittens who were just weeks old were rescued from the grounds of the Great Dover Estate in SE1 recently after a housing officer reported them to the Celia Hammond Trust.

The mother, Cleo, and her most recent litter are now being cared for in a foster home and will be ready for new homes in a few weeks’ time.

Two of her first litter, Anchovy and Sardine, have found a new home, but three are still in the rescue centre as the ‘foster homes’ used by Celia Hammond are now all full up.

A spokesperson for the Celia Hammond Trust said their rescue centre and foster homes are “full to bursting” with around 250 cats and kittens in their care. “We are inundated with calls to help stray cats and kittens but are struggling to find space to accommodate them all,” they said.

The Trust is now appealing to all cat owners in Southwark to neuter their cats as soon as possible and offer a home to one of Cleo’s kittens.

  1. Maybe if celia hammond lowered the rehoming price just a little, more people will be able to afford to rescue the cats and kittens and still afford to get what the cat needs?
