Event gets Bermondsey care home residents singing and dancing for the first time

You’re never too old to try something new – that was the message of a singing and dancing session for Bermondsey care residents at the end of last month.

Older people from Keeton’s Sheltered Housing and the nearby Anchor Blue Grove Care Home were led by singer Rona Topaz, singing songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s with choreographed dance routine.

The class was part of ‘First Time for Everything’, a programme designed by Royal Voluntary Service to give older people the chance to do something for the first time.

June, from Keeton’s Sheltered Housing, who took part in the singing class, said: “It was nice to sing. Nice mixing and meeting different people.”

The scheme is supported by Prudential, a life insurance company.

Dee Davis, Royal Voluntary Service activity co-ordinator for London, said: “It’s been wonderful to see so many people enjoying our First Time for Everything activities.

“Thanks to funding from Prudential, we have lots more exciting events coming up and hope that even more older people, their carers and families will come along. It’s never too late to try something for the first time.”

The next First Time for Everything event is Having a Laugh! Learn Stand-up Comedy in Waterloo, at WAC, on Thursday 21 February at 2pm – 4.30pm.
