Aylesbury Estate boiler constantly being monitored for faults, despite £3.28m repair job

Sections of the Aylesbury Estate have been plagued by dodgy heating and unreliable hot water, despite millions being spent on a new system in 2014.

Southwark Council has confirmed to the News that the boiler – which cost £3.28m to replace two years ago – is now being checked manually every two hours.

Repair works were carried out last week for the plant room affecting the Latimer, Emberton, Danesfield and Calverton blocks, but some residents say there are still problems.

Jackie Somerford, a grandmother living by herself in Calverton, told the News: “Sometimes it goes on and off, but water is only lukewarm most of the time.

“It’s still not been right since they switched the boiler back on in the middle of October.

“It’s happening all over, everyone is going on about it. Some of my mates here work as builders, and after work they’re dirty and need a shower – but it’s cold.

“A lot of people ring the council to complain, and nothing really happens. What annoys me is that we’re still paying service charge for it.”

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, said: “Sadly, older estates like Aylesbury are prone to engineering issues with their heating systems and we apologise to residents for the inconvenience – we’re working hard to ensure the boilers function properly.

“We did have some issues last week at the Latimer plant room which affected Latimer, Emberton, Danesfield and Calverton – the affected part was repaired last week.

“While the system is now working, we are awaiting delivery for another part to fix the hot water system permanently. As a precaution, and to ensure service provision to residents, we arranged for the plant room to be checked every two hours by our contractor.”
