300 homes planned for Southwark tube station

Southwark underground station is set to be transformed after Transport for London confirmed plans on Monday to build 300 homes at the site.

TfL have partnered with Development Securities for the project at Blackfriars Road, which will also include retail and restaurant space.

The planned one-acre site is currently made up of a disused office and empty space around and above the Jubilee Line station.

Graeme Craig, TfL’s director of commercial development, said: “The development above and around Southwark Tube station will see the creation of homes, jobs and new community facilities on a site that has been left undeveloped for far too long.

“Our joint venture with Development Securities is another example of the work we are doing to maximise our assets whilst generating vital revenue that we can invest in the transport network.”

It is not yet know what percentage of the 300 properties will be affordable homes, with a public consultation set to take place.

Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, hopes that the development will benefit as many local people as possible. “A lack of affordable housing is the single biggest issue facing London. Any development above Southwark underground station should include affordable housing.

“The land is a public asset – and Transport for London has a duty to provide the best possible outcome for local people.”

The News reported last month that other tube stations had also been earmarked for flat and offices, including at Bermondsey and Elephant and Castle.
