Charity collection in Walworth for victims of domestic abuse

A local councillor is holding a charity collection at St Peter’s Church in Walworth for victims of domestic abuse.

The women’s refuge based in Southwark is seeking supplies such as women’s and children’s toiletries, as well as nappies, toys and books.

Faraday ward councillor Samantha Jury-Dada said the deadline for making donations will be this evening, Thursday, March 9, and that supplies should be given in at the Inspire centre – in the church’s crypt in Liverpool Grove.

Labour Cllr Jury-Dada said: “I suggested in January that our March Labour branch meeting could be combined into a collection for a local charity, and it’s quite fitting as March 8 is International Women’s Day.”

She said that the subject is one that’s close to her heart.

“I completely sympathise with people that go into refuge. It’s a complete last resort for people having to flee their homes,” Cllr Jury-Dada said.

“Most people that go to the refuge won’t be from Southwark, they could be from anywhere in the country and this is the only way they can be safe.

“Unfortunately, Domestic abuse tends to start during pregnancy and soon after a baby is born.

“It ranges from the coercive control, threats of violence, to violent abuse and murder.”
