Cyclist taken to hospital with leg injuries after collision with lorry in Bermondsey

A cyclist was taken to hospital with leg injuries after a collision with a lorry in Bermondsey.

Police said the male cyclist was in a serious but stable condition following the incident on Jamaica Road at about 7.49am today, Tuesday.

The collision prompted calls for Transport for London’s proposed Cycle Superhighway 4 route, which would run through Jamaica Road, to be built.

Chris Wragg, who witnessed the scene, said on Twitter: “Mangled cycle and tipper truck on Jamaica Road #SE16.

“Looks pretty horrendous, hope the cyclist is ok. Right in the middle of the CS4 route that needs to be built asap.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said inquiries were ongoing and officers from Southwark continued to investigate.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We sent an incident response officer, a motorcycle responder and an ambulance crew to the scene.

“We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance by road.

“We treated a man at the scene for leg injuries and took him as a priority to a major trauma centre.”

The road was closed to traffic at the junction with Southwark Park Road and West Lane but was later reopened by 12.30pm.
