Appeal to identify man who approached girl at bus stop and tried to make her travel with him

A man who allegedly tried to persuade a ten-year-old girl waiting at a bus stop to travel with him is being searched for by police.

The girl was approached by the man shortly before 4pm at Poynders Road in Clapham, SW4, on Tuesday, May 21, when he started by asking her directions.

As a bus pulled up, he asked the young girl to get on with him. After she refused, he ordered her to comply, telling her she was ‘being naughty’ by not ‘obeying’ him.

The girl’s mother, who was on the bus, confronted him. Police say he became irate and started banging his head on the shelter before walking away.

Detective Constable Teresa Moore, from the Met’s roads and transport policing command, said: “This incident left a young girl feeling very frightened.

“Thankfully, her mother arrived on the scene to confront this man, but this was clearly a fraught situation and we want to speak to this man as soon as possible.

“If anyone can identify him, I would ask them to contact police immediately”.

He is described as black, 5ft 9 inches tall, with a slim build and around 33-35 years old. He is said to have chiselled facial features.

The man was wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans and white trainers.

He carried a black and red JD rucksack on his back and was wearing large black earphones.

Any witnesses or anyone with information should call police on 101 or, to stay anonymous, call 0800 555 111.
