Pupils’ marathon effort for playground

A Dulwich primary school managed to raise £4,000 for a new playground by running a marathon.

Children from nursery right up to Year 6 at Heber Primary School ran a sponsored ‘combined marathon’ on Friday, April 22, to raise money for an upgrade to their playground.

The youngsters took part in the challenge in support of Sam Moore, a father of children at the school, who ran the London Marathon on Sunday to raise much-needed cash for the playground plans.

Mr Moore managed to raise more than £2,000, bringing the school’s total to £4,000.

Co-headteacher Rivka Rosenberg said it was the East Dulwich school’s parents’ and friend’s committee that came up with the idea.

“We do a fun run every year and this year we brought it forward to coincide with the London Marathon so the children are aware of the significant events happening in the city and feel a part of it,” she said.

“The issue is that our school playground is really small; we are really committed to our children taking part in as much sport and activity as possible but we are limited in our space and what we can do with it.

“The parents and carers are incredibly supportive of any fundraising we do; they always get behind it and when the children can do their bit they are really engaged and excited about it.”

Each class at the school has about 26 pupils, therefore every child ran a mile lap around Dulwich Park on Friday so that each class completed a marathon.
