New primary to move into site of former Southwark Free School

A new primary school will move into the building constructed for another free school which closed its doors earlier this year.

John Keats Primary Free School, proposed by the existing John Donne School, in Peckham, is expected to open in September 2018.

The new school will move into premises in Rotherhithe New Road which were originally purpose-built for Southwark Free School.

The tiny Southwark Free School closed its doors earlier this year after it only managed to fill fourteen per cent of its 420 places, and its 56 pupils were given places elsewhere in the borough.

The vision is for John Keats to fulfil the shortfall of places left behind by Southwark Free School, which was expected to provide 60 school places per year in Bermondsey.

A public consultation set up on the John Keats website shows that Communitas Education Trust proposes to build the new free school in Rotherhithe New Road, SE16 3DH.

The new free school, recently granted approval by the Department for Education, will cater for 420 pupils.

John Keats will be a co-educational school with two forms of entry from reception through to Year 6, providing 60 places in each year group and a nursery providing places for three to four year olds. It promises to provide a “first-class, creative education” for its students.

As part of the pre-opening phase, the team at John Keats is holding a public consultation for six weeks, consulting with parents, residents, businesses and the wider community.

This public consultation opened on Monday, May15, and will close on June 23.
