Southwark entries wanted for disability photo competition in City Hall

Southwark residents are being asked to challenge disability stereotypes by submitting to a photography competition.

Youmanity, a human rights charity, is running its annual photo competition – and this year’s is themed around disability.

The free competition, called ‘This-Ability’, is open to amateur and professional photographers and submissions should tell a story which challenges stereotypes.

Angelo Iudice, chairman of Youmanity, said: “This award aims to challenge the stereotyping of disabled persons by highlighting that each of us is an individual.

“Through photography we celebrate our individuality, allowing others to see the disability as one of many aspects that make up a person’s unique identity.”

Entries will be judged by a panel of professional photographers and disability rights activists with the winning art being displayed in City Hall.

Winners will also get £1,000 and a gold medal at a ceremony to coincide with the International Day of Disabled Persons on December 3.

Each entry should be three themed photos telling the person’s story while the deadline for submissions is October 26.

Winners are announced on November 5.

Entries to the disability awareness project can be submitted here, along with further details.
