A look back to yesteryear – new exhibition charts 40 years of Rotherhithe

A new exhibition charting 40 years of Rotherhithe life is set to open, offering locals the chance to see the changing face of the area since the docks of its heritage closed, writes Emma Snaith…

Community charity Time and Talents is presenting the exhibition, which pairs now-and-then photographs since 1977.

Photographers Peter Gazey and and Geoff Howard capture the transformation of Rotherhithe since the dock closures. From a largely self-sufficient working class society, Rotherhithe changed dramatically in the early 1980s as the whole docklands area was developed.

The exhibition is open on September 16-17 at the Time & Talents Centre as part of Open House Weekend.

Time and Talents was founded in 1887, and runs targeted projects for people with high levels of need, such as isolated elderly people.

The Rotherhithe and Bermondsey based charity has been shortlisted for Charity of the Year with an income of less than £1 million at this year’s Charity Times awards.

Rotherhithe40 exhibition is on at Time & Talents Centre, The Old Mortuary, St Marychurch Street, SE16 4JE on September 16th & 17th, 10-4pm.
